Hollywood actrices Suzanne Yale (Streep) is verslaafd aan drugs. Nadat ze is afgekickt staat haar studio er op dat ze bij haar aan drankverslaafde moeder Doris (Shirley MacLaine) intrekt om te herstellen. Suzanne probeert haar moeder echter al jaren te ontwijken, maar krijgt langzamerhand toch meer begrip voor haar.
