Rise of the Planet of the Apes is een prequel van "Planet of the Apes", waarin een astronaut op een planeet terecht komt waar apen de baas zijn over de mens. De productie van Tim Burton uit 2001 was een remake: de eerste Planet of the Apes kwam uit in 1968.

Rupert Wyatt regisseerde eerder The Escapist (2008).
James Franco kennen we onder andere als Harry Osborne in de Spider-Man trilogie. Voor zijn rol in 127 Hours kreeg hij een Oscarnominatie. Freida Pinto werd bekend door haar rol in Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
Acteur Andy Serkis heeft ervaring met gevaarlijke apen door zijn rol in King Kong (2005). Daarnaast speelde hij Gollum in The Lord of the Rings.
